Program Basics:
The National Capital Region (NCR) of the National Park Service (NPS) is made up of over 30 NPS park units organized in 13 administrative units
From the White House and the National Mall to Prince William Forest, from the Baltimore-Washington Parkway to the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, these parks tell the stories of our nation's past
The parks help preserve significant natural resources near densely populated urban centers
The NCR parks are important national treasures serving millions of visitors each year
Participants of this project will help enhance each visitor's experience.
Specifics about position:
The NPS uses various physical installations like Interpretive Media (IM) to explain to visitors the significance of different features of the parks
These IM consist primarily of outdoor exhibits and museum installations
Much of the NPS IM was installed 20 or more years ago and is in poor condition
Participants of this project will confirm the inventory of IM using GIS
Participants will assess the condition of IM and record whether the IM is accessible for people with disabilities
They will visit each park, photograph existing IM and collect/record data about these installations
This work will be coordinated with and assisted by park staff
They will then enter the data into the NPS Facility Management Software System (FMSS)
Using this information, NPS will establish a plan to upgrade or replace IM as needed.
